Legal Services
Education employees join together for many reasons. One of the most important is to create an umbrella to protect their rights. The lack of such collective protection would leave them in a nearly defenseless position, considering the high cost of legal services in the private market.
To protect, defend, and represent members, the Association's legal services program provides:
- Protection against unfair employment practices, contract violations, malpractice charges, and wrongful nonrenewal and dismissal proceedings.
- Liability insurance of $1 million for job-related criminal and civil actions.
- On-site assistance by trained staff.
- Expert attorneys highly experienced in school law.
- Legal defense funds and attorney assistance.
- Training in grievance processing and the protection of member rights.
- Training in human relations, affirmative action, child abuse policy, employee evaluation, and other rights areas.
- Two free 30-minute consultation sessions per year for personal, non-job-related legal needs through the Attorney Referral Program.
