Learn About YOUR Uniserv Program
The UniServ program is a cooperative effort of the state and national associations to provide members with increased professional staff at the local level and to improve the service programs for all levels of the Association.
The NDEA fully implemented its UniServ program in the fall of 1980 with the employment of highly qualified people, each serving prescribed districts that are similar in size and number of members.
The National Education Association subsidizes NDEA for a significant share of the costs of the program and also provides training programs and funding for the directors to improve their skills. Under this program, the NEA can call upon the NDEA's UniServ directors to assist in emergency or crisis situations elsewhere in the country for a limited period of time.
Each director is generally responsible for membership promotion, negotiations and contract maintenance, teacher rights, organizational health, state and national programs, and the general welfare of the Association within the unit. Local association leaders and members should feel free to call upon the UniServ director in their unit regarding their professional needs and concerns. The UniServ directors, however, spend a great deal of time in the field so each office is equipped with an answering machine; calls will be returned as soon as possible. Should members have an emergency and need to have immediate contact with a staff member, they should call the state office in Bismarck for assistance.
The UniServ program is managed by a UniServ coordinator who is based in the Bismarck office. Should a problem or concern develop regarding the program, members can call the state office and ask for Greg Burns, the executive director.
It is the intent of each UniServ director to visit every local association in the unit at least once during the year. This may, however, prove to be impossible because of geography and other responsibilities. Should a visit to your school or local association be desirable, please call and make such a request.NDEA Headquarters
